Labor Day Fun

The weekend is nearly over :-(  Saturday I did all my menu planning & grocery shopping, Sunday I did my food prep for the week (no fish! lol!), and today we had a family bbq. Grilled up burgers & chicken (the leftovers got cut, weighed and portioned out for my food this week), then there was dessert. Apple pie, ice cream, cookies... not a clean ending to the day's food, haha, but it's not how we normally eat so we'll call it treat time :-)  The family is now crashed throughout the house - between the pool games and the food, they're beat, as is the dog. The weather wasn't as hot today, and we did have a periodic breeze, so all in all it was a really nice low-key day.  It was great to be able to enjoy the food portion of the day, along with the family, though there's a new dynamic happening and I'm not sure how I feel about it...

The family have all watched me eat uber clean for years with occasional treats, but with my looooong competition prep diet - which I never cheated on, not once, not one bite or sip - they're having a hard time seeing me eat "normally" now, and they freak a bit to see me enjoying a treat. I'm getting a lot of comments about not getting fat again, or slowing down, etc... it was funny at first, again I say, At First.

After the first couple days post show, I reigned it in. I ate clean and in proper portions all week, and I'm back in the gym working out and doing cardio (which is soooo nice!!) so I felt fine having a piece of pie (read sliver) and ice cream (1/4 cup). When I added a couple tablespoons (yeah, measured) of ice cream the comments began again. I know it's out of concern for me, but still. This is a feature of post-show life I was not anticipating.

There's an adjustment for all of us, I'm learning, in going back to my normal lifestyle.

Anyway, I'm ready for the week, I've got chicken breast, my mini chicken loaves, and greek yogurt for my proteins, snow peas & grape tomatoes, green beans, and multi-colored cauliflower for my steamer bag veggies (I love having variety again!), and Seeds of Change packets of multi-grains for my lunch carbs. Grapefruit, apples, pears, blackberries, strawberries & blueberries for my fruit, and oatmeal with protein powder for my breakfasts. Plus, of course, my protein powder pudding :-)  And a fresh box of decaf Chai tea for the evenings.

I found an awesome product this weekend! Shopping at Whole Foods, there were several vendors set up with "tasters". One was NuttZo. It's a blend of peanut, hazelnut, sunflower seeds, brazil nuts, flax seeds and more - no sugar, and super high in Omega 3's. And it tastes incredible! They were running a special, buy one get one free, so I went a head and bought some. Sunday, I added 2 Tbsp to my 1 cup of greek yogurt and a couple Tbsp of my homemade granola - HEAVEN! This morning I swapped my usual 2 Tbsp ground flax for 2 Tbsp NuttZo in my oatmeal - again - HEAVEN!!! So incredibly good! The stuff is really pricey, though, and frankly I wouldn't have bought it without the buy one get one free deal. Now that I've enjoyed it and fallen in love with it, I'm hoping I can afford my new fix, lol! Seriously good stuff! Plus, the company donates a small portion of their proceeds to charity. Pretty cool. And yes, I have hidden the jar from the kids :-) hehehe.

Happy Labor Day, hope yours was great! :-)

  1. Since NuttZo is so pricey, have you thought of making your own? You just need a decent food processor. I've been doing it for a long time, and it's really fun :) I have explicit instructions on my blog, but you pretty much just dump in all of your nuts and seed and turn it on.

  2. Hey Allison! Thanks for the tip! I will definitely give that a (haha) whirl! :-)
